Marlon Brando once claimed that “most of the successful people in Hollywood are failures as human beings.” He is feeding off this belief that those who completely sell themselves to the entertainment industry are nothing close to a human being of the norm. Ironically, Thomas Tull, CEO of Legendary Entertainment, was a successful businessman in New York City before following his interests of comic books and current pop culture to the entertainment industry in Hollywood. Legendary Entertainment was founded in 2000 and, despite its short existence, has already grossed $8 billion worldwide at the box office. It currently has an estimated net worth of $3.5 billion.

Tull currently runs the motion picture division of Legendary Entertainment called Legendary Pictures. 

Legendary prides itself with its collaborative work with distinguished directors such as Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Night Rises, Inception), Todd Phillips (Hangover Part I, Hangover Part II, Due Date), Zach Snyder (300, Man of Steel), Brian Helgeland (42). Notable actors such as Michael Caine, Harrison Ford, Morgan Freeman, Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Michael Fassbender, Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifinakis have also been featured in films produced by Legendary.

In the year 2005, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures signed a contract that agreed to co-finance and co-produce 45 films over the next eight years. Together they produced globally successful films such as The Dark Knight franchise and “The Hangover” trilogy. Batman Begins was the film under the partnership with Legendary and Warner Bros. It was exceedingly successful grossing $375 million on a $150 million budget. The two subsequent sequels from the franchise, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, each grossed over $1 billion in the worldwide box-office.

After an eight year partnership, Legendary and Warner Bros. parted ways in 2013. It was later announced that Legendary would begin a similar partnership with Universal Pictures for the next 5 years starting in 2014. Legendary plans to cross-promote and take advantage of Universal’s theme parks as well as consider producing films that originated with Universal Pictures. Legendary Entertainment recently started to expand its business on an international level.

In 2013, Legendary East partnered up and signed a long term multi-year contract with China’s state-owned film company China Film Group (CFG). The largest distributor of Chinese content, Legendary East plans to co-produce and co-finance several films over the next five years. It was announced by the newly appointed China Film chairman La Peikang and Legendary East CEO Peter Loehr on April 14, 2014, that CFG made an “eight-figure” investment on two feature films: Warcraft and Seventh Son.”

Legendary Pictures is slated to come out with several feature films this year including a new Christopher Nolan film, Interstellar, a sequel to 300 titled 300: Rise of an Empire, a Godzilla reboot and Dracula Untold. Although the transition from Warner Bros. to Universal Pictures is still relatively recent, Legendary has several projects lined up for production such as Crimson Peak, a thriller that is set to release in 2015 starring Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain. Legendary is also exploring the landscape of Universal-owned films such as Jurassic Park’s 2015 sequel Jurassic World.
